As an architecture student, you learn about all the different time periods of history that architecture evolved through, such as Renaissance, Modernism, Bauhaus, Deconstructivism, etc. One of the pinnacle moment in the Modernist Era was the Glass House by Philip Johnson located in New Canaan, Connecticut.
When you learn about this building in school, it almost seems unreal. The perfect site, the perfect project, an architect that makes a house for himself with an unlimited amount of money and resources. I never thought I would actually see this house until now. The site that the house is located on has other buildings that Philip Johnson later added to the urban landscape, including some outdoor sculptures. I booked a tour that included the entire site because why not, I’m already here (you can choose different tours based on price range)! The tour is about two hours long and they tour guide explains Philip Johnson’s entire life along with describing the intentions of each house on the site. I wanted to go visit during the Fall and I totally recommend it because the orange, yellow, red, leaves are so gorgeous and with the Glass House in front of all that foliage, I had to see it!
I don’t want to blabber too much about the site and the architectural concepts, but please enjoy these photos I took. I made sure NO people were in them and I tried to capture the money shots for myself haha. The photos are organized by each building on the site that we visited in order.
