August 30 – September 4

I AM FINALLY ON STUDY ABROAD! I FINALLY HAVE A GOOD WIFI SIGNAL TO UPDATE THE WORLD! This post might be lengthy, but I will try to summarize as much as possible.

The university I attend has a base study center in Castiglion Fiorentino, a small town on top of a steep hill in the middle of Tuscany. It is about an hour away from Florence by train. This town is my home for the next three months while I take studio, an art class, a science history class, and weekly field trips to different cities in Italy. All the students are free to travel on the weekends, which means we will mainly be flying out of Italy to other European countries. It is a jam-packed 95 days for me out of the country, but it is and will be the best experience ever!

Just some quick info:

The weather in Tuscany is humid and very warm, but the mornings and nights are very cool and breezy. Although, it is starting to cool off here quickly because Fall is approaching! It also rains almost every other day in the afternoons.

The center feeds us twice a day and the chefs cook the best homemade meals ever! The gelato in Italy is supreme of course, no other country can stand a chance.

We have three classes, two each day, on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Wednesday is field trip day and Friday through Sunday is free travel days.

The first week I arrived, the center gave us a tour around Castiglion Fiorentino, their central market, the Tuscan ruins, etc. We didn’t start school until this past week, but overall it will be mainly relaxed studio work. This past Saturday, they took us to Arezzo, a town 10 minutes away from Castiglion Fiorentino by train. Arezzo is quite large, very charming, and buzzing with people everywhere. I toured some of the churches, medieval piazzas and the fort, then stayed for the annual joust between quarters of the city (Go Santo Spirito!!).

This week we started classes, my favorite so far is my mix media ink printing class. It is a new technique for me and we are learning the original practice, so I am super excited to be diving into something new and exploring what I can create with it.

We are travelling to Florence for a field trip on Wednesday and then our weekend is free for travel. I think my friends and I are planning on visiting a nearby lake to swim and enjoy the last bits of summer.

Arrivederci for now!
